20-Yr-Old Cat Is Dropped Off At Shelter For Missing The Litter Box

If you are fortunate enough to have a feline in your life, you are absolutely fortunate. After all, cats bring a lot to our lives whether it is love, companionship, or anything else.

Perhaps that is why many of us are so surprised when we find out that a cat is not loved to the fullest extent possible. This includes Lady, a 20-year-old who was surrendered by her family to a local shelter in Baltimore, Maryland.

When pets are surrendered in this way, the staff often asked why they are being given up. It seems as if Lady had some accidents outside of the litter box, so they just wanted to get rid of her.

Lady was confused because her family was abandoning her and she was terrified. After being examined by a veterinarian, they even found out that she had a reason why she was having accidents.

Not only was Lady 20 years old, she was experiencing the beginning stages of renal failure and was almost blind. After watching her, they said that her “aging, wobbly back legs sometimes make it difficult for her to get to her litter box in time.”

Now that Lady was entering her golden years, she suddenly found herself alone.

After a lifetime of being a loyal and loving pet, she belongs in a home and with a family to prove to her that love is not conditional and to show her that even though she is sick, she is deserving of someone who will love her until her very last day.

A picture was posted on social media of Lady, along with the status: “She’s alone missing her home, scared, confused and wondering what she did to end up here. Where did her family go, when will they be back to get her? Where is her soft bed, and all of her favorite sun spots? No pet deserves to spend the end of their life in a shelter kennel—Lady needs an angel to save her.”

Fortunately, a veterinary tech named Rebekah Carlyle saw the post and it reminded her of her own cat, Minnie. Minnie was also adopted when she was 20 years old and just four months later, she died from renal failure.

Rebekah said: “I was absolutely shattered. They sent me home from work, I couldn’t even function. I think about her every day.”

After she and her husband, James, went to meet the cat they said they lost it the moment they saw her. They knew that Lady would be going home with them and they would provide the forever family she needed.

Lady was nervous at first but it wasn’t long before she was enjoying a lot of attention from her mom. She enjoys being scratched behind the ears and having her mom nearby when she eats.

A prescription diet was given to her for kidney health and she is starting supplements to help with arthritis. She said: “I am so happy to be able to help another, I feel like I owe it to Minnie. They didn’t deserve to be thrown away after 20 years of the only thing they’ve ever known.”
