Husband Criticizes Wife for Supporting Her Impoverished Mother Until She Retaliates
A dismissive husband ridicules his wife for financially supporting her destitute mother, but she persists despite his objections. Ultimately, she discovers she was entirely justified in defying her husband.
When Lucy Houghton wed Sam Fraser, she believed it was the wisest decision of her life. Despite being eight years her senior, Sam was intelligent, handsome, and seemingly deeply in love with her—or so she thought until everything crumbled.
Lucy’s family had always expressed reservations about Sam, particularly the idea of her marrying him. “Honey,” her mother cautioned, “he’s not the right man for you. Trust us! You will regret making him your partner!”
“Your mother is spot on, Lucy!” her father interjected. “You’re rushing into marriage! He might seem charming now, but Sam isn’t someone who will stand by you forever!”
Despite these warnings, Lucy was sure of Sam’s affection for her. Their whirlwind romance quickly led to a marriage proposal, which she accepted without a second thought, and they were married within a month.
Their wedding was nothing short of lavish, with Sam sparing no expense to impress. He was a well-to-do accountant at a renowned firm in California, eager to flaunt his success. Lucy was proud, feeling vindicated in her choice, as Sam appeared before their guests as a respectable, affluent man.
However, her pride turned to disillusionment just a year later.
“Lucy!” Sam shouted, storming towards her with an envelope in hand. “What the hell is this? How could you not think to tell me about this?”
“Sam, calm down! Can’t you see I’m busy with breakfast?”
“To hell with your breakfast! Why didn’t you tell me you moved money from our joint account to your mother? Why do they still need your help?!”
“Sam, what are you talking about? I was raised to support my parents! They needed help, so I used MY savings to assist them!”
“You think you can just withdraw money from our account without discussing it with me first?”
“Sam, it’s a JOINT account, and I contribute to it too! Just leave me alone and let me cook. You’re really getting on my nerves lately!” she muttered, returning to her breakfast preparations.
Sam stormed off to the living room, but this confrontation was just the beginning of their constant arguments. He would incessantly complain about her financial support to her mother, but she continued regardless, soon realizing she had made the right choice.
Their relationship deteriorated over three months as Lucy’s savings dwindled from her monthly support to her mother. Their arguments gave way to a chilling silence.
Eventually, they became so estranged that Sam began openly dating other women, unconcerned about hiding his infidelity from his wife.
By then, Lucy had fallen out of love and, upon discovering his affairs, decided to end their marriage, no longer willing to tolerate his disrespect.
When Sam returned home one evening, Lucy was ready with the divorce papers. “Here are the divorce papers,” she announced, throwing an envelope onto the living room table. “I’ve signed them, and I hope you will too, promptly. Then you can carry on with your affairs, and I can have peace!”
Sam smirked. “And what will you do without me, Lucy? Go back to your poor parents? You’ll come crawling back!”
“You wish, Sam!” Lucy retorted. “You know what? My parents were right about you! You’re a jerk and a control freak! I’m relieved I never stopped supporting them, especially since I saw this coming!” With that, she left his house, luggage in tow.
Sam was indifferent, pleased to be rid of what he considered a burden. He failed to grasp the hint she had left about her ongoing financial support to her mother.
When Sam later learned that Lucy had been using her money to pay off a mortgage for an apartment under her mother’s name—a property intended as a surprise for him—he was stunned. How could her family, seemingly modest in means, afford such a luxurious property?
It turned out the apartment was Lucy’s, purchased as a surprise for Sam. However, her father, suspecting Sam’s superficial affection, advised Lucy to transfer it to her mother’s name as a test of Sam’s character.
This revelation led to a heated argument, but Lucy eventually agreed, exclaiming in frustration, “You’re going to be wrong! Sam isn’t like that!” But as it turned out, she was the one who was mistaken, and her father was right.
During their divorce proceedings, Sam adamantly refused to sign the papers and even threatened to sue for the apartment, claiming entitlement to its value. However, legally, he had no standing, and the divorce moved forward. Once it was finalized, Lucy felt a profound sense of relief.
She visited her parents the day the divorce was finalized to thank them for their unwavering support. “I’m sorry, mom and dad,” she said, embracing them. “You were right, and I was wrong. I promise never to doubt you again. This experience has been invaluable.”
From that day on, Lucy and her parents grew even closer, and they now reside together in the apartment that remains in her mother’s name.
