I Discovered My Mother-in-Law and Husband’s Scheme to Conceal Food From Me Because I’m ‘Too Fat’ — I Retaliated Against Both of Them

Emily was appalled when she overheard her mother-in-law and husband plotting in hushed tones. Their plan to hide food from her because they thought she was “too fat” was deeply upsetting. Striving to put an end to this toxic behavior, Emily cleverly orchestrated a fitting revenge neither would anticipate.

“Honey, but you don’t want to live with an elephant, do you?” Noele’s voice rang from the kitchen.

I froze on the couch, my knitting needles suspended. Did I hear that correctly? My heart pounded as I strained to hear more.

“I don’t, but she’ll notice it and start asking questions,” my husband replied with uncertainty.

“Act clueless. I’ll remove all the food. I’m ashamed that my daughter-in-law is so large. She’s too fat,” Noele continued, her voice laced with contempt.

My heart felt as if it shattered into countless pieces. Three years ago, after having our son at 40, I struggled to regain my pre-pregnancy body.

I toiled long hours to support our family, even extending financial help to Noele when she needed it. How could she say such hurtful things about me?

Setting down my knitting, I stared at the wall, trying to process the conversation I had just overheard. Tears welled up, but I blinked them back. I didn’t want to break down now.

My phone buzzed, pulling me from my thoughts. I realized I had been sitting in a daze, replaying the events of the previous week when Noele had visited us.

Unbeknownst to me, the missing food was her doing. She had been stealthily clearing out the fridge, not wanting her son to be married to a “fat” woman.

Taking a deep breath, I checked the phone. It was a message from Alexander, my husband.

It read: “Hey honey, don’t wait up. My friends are insisting I stay a little longer :)”

Recently, he always seemed to have an excuse to stay out. I began to wonder if my weight was the reason. Did he really see me as an elephant?

I put my phone down and wiped my eyes. I needed to remain strong for my son. He was my everything, and I couldn’t let their cruel words break me, even though it was difficult.

Every glance in the mirror reminded me of their hurtful conversation. Every meal I cooked felt like a betrayal.

I tried to focus on the positives: I had a good job, a wonderful son, and a home I had fought hard to build. Noele’s comments couldn’t take those away from me. But the pain persisted.

That night, as I lay in bed, the conversation replayed ceaselessly in my mind. The sting of their insults was raw, and my anger grew with each passing thought.

“I can’t believe they think this way about me,” I whispered to myself, glancing at Alexander, who slept soundly beside me. “I’m the one who works and buys all the food.”

I sighed and stared at the ceiling. It wasn’t fair. I had always tried to be supportive and kind, putting everyone’s needs before my own. What did I get in return? Cruel words and hurtful remarks.

Then, it hit me. I had been too accommodating for too long. It was time to stand up for myself. I deserved respect and appreciation, not insults and judgments. I looked at Alexander again.

He seemed so peaceful, utterly unaware of the storm inside me.

I couldn’t continue like this, letting their words break me. Tomorrow, I would start making changes. I wouldn’t let Noele’s cutting comments dictate my self-worth. And I wouldn’t tolerate Alexander’s silence.

He needed to understand how his words, or the lack of them, affected me. We were meant to be partners, a team. It was time for him to step up and support me.

I woke up early, determined to set my plan into motion.

After breakfast, I decided to visit the Asian market to buy some unique ingredients. As I entered, the array of products was overwhelming, but I knew exactly what I needed.

“Excuse me,” I asked the vendor, holding a jar. “How much is this?”

The vendor smiled and told me the price. “These are quite popular,” he noted. “Great for special recipes.”

“Perfect,” I responded, adding several jars to my basket. “I’ll take these.”

With everything I needed, I headed home. Alexander was out, and I knew Noele was due to visit that evening. I had the entire day to prepare.

I took the day off work to ensure everything was flawless. First, I emptied the fridge of old items.

Next, I carefully filled jars and bottles with the ‘unique’ groceries I’d purchased, making them look like regular food items Noele was used to seeing. I even labeled a few with familiar names to complete the illusion.

“This should do it,” I murmured to myself, feeling both excited and nervous.

After setting up a camera to capture Noele’s reaction, I stepped back to admire my handiwork. Everything was in place, and now all I had to do was wait.

I spent the rest of the day tidying up, ensuring no evidence of my plan remained.

As evening approached, anticipation and jitters filled me.

Noele arrived on time, and I made sure to be out of the house for a few hours, giving her the perfect chance to raid the fridge.

When I returned, I found Noele in the kitchen, pale and trembling, clutching a jar filled with live insects. Her eyes were wide with horror and fury.

“What the hell is this?!” she screamed, her voice shaking.

I put on my most innocent face. “Oh, Noele, what’s wrong? Did you find something you didn’t like?”

“These… these jars! They’re filled with bugs! And some are alive! Are you insane?” she shrieked, her hands trembling as she held up the jar.

“Oh, those?” I replied calmly. “I thought you might enjoy some exotic snacks. I hear they’re very nutritious.”

“This is revolting! How could you do this?” she yelled, her face red with anger.

I took a deep breath. “How could I do this?” I retorted sharply. “How could you steal from me and insult me behind my back? Did you think I wouldn’t find out? Or hear you calling me an elephant while plotting to steal the food I buy with my hard-earned money?”

Noele’s face drained of color. She opened her mouth but couldn’t speak. I continued, my voice steady.

“I’ve endured your insults and disrespect for too long, Noele. I work hard to support this family, and all you do is exploit my kindness. Well, no more. This is my home, and you will respect it and me.”

At that moment, Alexander walked in, looking perplexed and shocked.

He stared at the jar Noele held, then at me. “What’s happening here?”

“Oh, your mother is just discovering my special surprise for her,” I said calmly. “I’ve stocked up on some unique groceries.”

Noele thrust the jar at him. “She put insects in the fridge! This is her revenge!”

But I wasn’t finished.

“Actually,” I corrected, “it’s my form of justice. You both thought you could humiliate me and take advantage of me. Well, now you see that actions have consequences. You can’t insult me and steal from me without repercussions.”

“This is outrageous! You’re insane!” Noele shouted, her voice trembling with rage.

“Maybe,” I replied, meeting her glare. “Or maybe I’m just tired of being disrespected in my own home. You can leave now, and don’t come back unless you plan to treat me with the respect I deserve.”

Noele stormed out, still clutching the jar, and Alexander stood there, speechless.

“I can’t believe you did that,” he finally murmured, stunned. It was time for him to learn a lesson.

“Believe it,” I said firmly. “And if you think for one second that I’ll tolerate this behavior from either of you again, reconsider. This is my house, and I won’t be treated like a doormat.”

Alexander looked down, his face red with embarrassment. “I… I’m sorry,” he muttered quietly.

“Sorry isn’t enough,” I responded.

“You need to earn back my trust and respect. Until then, don’t expect things to return to normal. And I hope you’re looking for a job. Because you clearly don’t help at home. Maybe with more support, I can focus on my health, don’t you think?”

From that day on, the atmosphere in our house shifted. Noele didn’t dare show her face again, and Alexander had a lot to make up for. Sometimes, standing up for yourself is the only way to ensure you won’t be pushed around.

Do you think I was right to stand up for myself?
