“Don’t eat my dog’s food!” a girl said to a poor boy she was hosting; 12 years later, he proposed to her
A young girl saw a poor boy wandering the street and took him into her home. But he was starving and confused, and he started eating the dog’s food. She stopped him, and they had a real meal. Little did she know what would happen years later.
“Come with me,” Samantha said to the boy she saw wandering the street. His cheeks were red, and his nose was running. He seemed to be about her age, five or six years old. The little girl thought the best thing to do was to bring him home, where her mom would know what to do.
The poor boy followed her through the back door, looking shyly around the house. “Mom!” Samantha called, not knowing where her mother was. “She must be in the shower. What’s your name?”
“Luke,” the boy answered softly. Samantha started to worry even more. Where was his mom? Or dad? Was he sick? Hungry? Would her mom be angry? the little girl wondered as she waited for her mother to arrive.
She had no idea that Luke would become an essential part of their lives.
Samantha was about to go find her mom when she noticed the boy by her dog. At first, she thought he was petting him, but then she heard crunching sounds. To her surprise, the boy had grabbed some dog kibble and was munching on it.
“Stop! Don’t eat my dog’s food!” she exclaimed, rushing over and sweeping the kibble out of his hand.
“But I’m so hungry,” the boy said, embarrassed.
Samantha didn’t know what to think. She was too young to fully understand the boy’s struggles, but she could empathize. “My mom will make us something soon,” she assured him.
At that moment, Lane, Samantha’s mother, appeared and was shocked to see the boy in her kitchen. Samantha explained everything and added that he was hungry.
Lane made food for the kids and prepared extra when she saw how quickly Luke devoured his meal.
Afterward, she put on a movie for them while she made some calls. No one in her Virginia neighborhood had any idea where the boy came from, so she called emergency services, who told her that the boy had run away from his foster home a few blocks away.
He had lost his parents in a fire and was first placed in a shelter, then in foster care. Since then, he had been running away and wandering the neighborhood. Fortunately, people always found him and called the police, so he was safely returned each time, but he kept running away.
Someone would soon come to pick up Luke. Meanwhile, the kids finished the movie, and Samantha started doing her homework. Lane overheard her telling Luke that she wanted to become a doctor and needed to study hard. The older woman smiled because her daughter had a big heart, and she saw the little boy absorbing every word Samantha said. It was a beautiful sight.
She had no idea that Luke would become an essential part of their lives.
When his foster parents came to get him, Luke promised he would never run away again if he could go to the same school as Samantha. The foster parents immediately agreed. They hadn’t enrolled him yet because he had been through a tough time after losing his parents, and they wanted him to adjust to his new environment.
Soon, they enrolled Luke in the local kindergarten, and he became Samantha’s best friend. He was always at her house, studying hard, respecting his foster parents and all the adults around him, and never ran away again. He was officially adopted by that foster family two years later.
Twelve years later, Luke and Samantha were 18 and about to graduate. They both got accepted to Harvard, and Luke finally gathered the courage to invite her to prom. He had been working part-time all year, saving up money, and showed up at Samantha’s house in a sleek white limousine.
At prom, he proposed to her while they danced.
“I knew I would marry you the night I left your house after you stopped me from eating dog food,” Luke said.
“Are you serious? We’re only 18!” Samantha laughed, playfully nudging his shoulder.
“We don’t have to get married for years. I just want you to know there’s no one else for me. I’ve loved you since I was five, so… will you marry me?” he asked softly so their classmates wouldn’t hear.
Samantha smiled shyly and nodded. They shared a gentle kiss for the first time. But it wouldn’t be the last. They stayed together through pre-med, medical school, residency, and internships. They opened their own practice and eventually got married.
Later, they had two sons and adopted three daughters. They helped as many orphaned children as they could by donating to charities, volunteering, and offering their medical services for free. It was as if their love was written in the stars… or perhaps in a medical book.
