AITA for kicking my sister out of my house because she refuses to stop feeding my cat vegan food?

A Reddit user recounts a tense familial situation after their sister moved in temporarily post-breakup. The problem started when the sister began insisting on feeding Whiskers, the user’s cat, a completely vegan diet, despite cats needing meat to survive.

Following numerous cautions and discovering her secretly bringing in non-vegan items, the user on Reddit insisted that she either cease the behavior or move out, which resulted in her moving out. Now, the Redditor is second-guessing whether they went too far by placing their cat’s well-being above familial relationships. Review the original account below for an in-depth look.

‘ AITA for kicking my sister out of my house because she refuses to stop feeding my cat vegan food?’

Alright, listen up. I’m a 29-year-old male, and I own a gorgeous cat called Whiskers. He’s been my trusty companion for more than eight years; I adore him more than words can describe. My younger sister, a 25-year-old female, just moved in for a short period. She needed a place to stay while she searched for a new job and a place to live after a difficult separation. That’s fine; family supports family.

Here’s the issue: my sister now believes she possesses the ability to communicate with cats and has unilaterally chosen to switch Whiskers to a vegan diet, arguing that “it’s healthier for him and the environment.” To begin with, Whiskers is a carnivore through and through; everyone understands that cats require meat! I’ve informed her numerous times that it’s detrimental to his health, and he clearly only wants to consume the chicken-flavored snacks I purchase for him.

She just grins, accusing me of lacking an open mind. It escalated to the point where I found her secretly mixing vegan cat food into his dish when she thought I couldn’t see her. That’s when I snapped and gave her an ultimatum: either cease this madness or leave. She opted for the latter, and now she’s calling me cruel for ending the relationship over “a cat’s food.”

I am LIVID that she believes she has superior knowledge regarding my cat’s health. Seriously, she’s prepared to jeopardize his health to force her ridiculous way of life onto him! Am I the asshole for prioritizing my cat over my sister?

CarpeCyprinidae −  NTA. Cats are obligate carnivores and you did the right thing to protect your pet from malnutrition

Ratchet_gurl24 −  But you didn’t kick her out over a ‘cats diet’. She left voluntarily. She repeatedly disrespected your wishes regarding your cat, and accused you of being closed minded. You gave her 2 options. 1# respect your wishes, or 2# get out. She chose the latter, rather than admit to her wrongdoing and stop crossing your boundaries.

ogiddyhearto −  yo honestly ur cat comes first here. like what’s up with her thinking whiskers can go vegan? sounds like she needs a reality check. good for u for stickin up for ur boy. family is important but so is keepin your pet healthy.

Critical-Off-Garlic −  Just to clarify, I love my sister and have supported her during her tough times, but this isn’t just about a cat! It’s like she’s trying to impose her crazy beliefs on me! Am I really the villain here?

MerryMoose923 −  NTA. Vegan diets are not good for cats – they are detrimental to a cat’s health. You gave your sister a choice – follow your rules when it comes to your cat, or get out. She chose to leave, and is now playing the victim. There is no way you are the A H in this situation. And good on you for making sure Whiskers has the best care/life.

lightlysaltedclams −  F**king with anyone’s animal should be an immediate “leave my house”. You’re just protecting your cat.

SamuelVimesTrained −  She chose to leave.. You actually did not kick her out. But she chooses being a (pathetic) victim because she cannot continue endangering your cats wellbeing…she is an animal abuser.. No mercy!. NTA

garlicheesebread −  NTA, and she also needs to quit f**king with your cat’s food without your permission because it’s probably gonna f**k his stomach up.

abominablesnowlady −  Ordinarily I am staunchly on the side of people over animals. But in this case NTA! She is essentially poisoning this cat. This has resulted in cats dying!

First-Lengthiness-16 −  NTA but why on earth would you expect a vegan to act rationally? There are few places on this planet that a vegan won’t stick their noses into.. Don’t let it back in your house

Was the original poster right to prioritize their cat’s well-being by asking their sister to leave, or was that too extreme of a response to a familial difference of opinion?
