Woman asks shelter for their oldest, most unwanted, hard-to-adopt dog. Here’s who they gave her

Melani entered the City of Sacramento’s Front Street Animal Shelter with a unique request: to adopt the dog that was least likely to find a home.

The shelter shared Melani’s heartwarming story on their Facebook page, revealing how she specifically asked for the oldest, most challenging dog to adopt.

Melani’s journey to the shelter was driven by more than just the desire to help a dog; she was seeking solace from her own grief.

The 72-year-old grandmother had recently lost her husband and then her beloved Staffordshire terrier, who had been a source of great comfort.

Feeling lonely and a bit down, her grandchildren suggested she needed a companion.

“You can’t just sit around here by yourself,” they told her.

When Melani met Jake at the shelter, it was a moment of destiny.

Jake, a senior dog with cancer and skin problems, had been overlooked by many.

But Melani wasn’t there just to find a great dog; she was there to save a life and offer unconditional love to a dog in dire need.

Jake’s condition didn’t deter Melani.

Despite being a 12-year-old stray with terminal skin cancer, deafness, and partial blindness, all Melani wanted was to give this dog the love he deserved.

She was undaunted by his medical needs or the costs involved.

The connection between Melani and Jake was immediate.

“Jake’s two friends ignored me, but Jake perked up and started howling,” Melani recalled.

She knew then that Jake was the one for her. She decided to give him a loving home for his final days.

Jake adapted quickly to his new home, finding happiness and comfort in Melani’s care.

The shelter described their bond as a ‘match made in heaven’, a sentiment echoed by Melani.

She found joy and companionship in Jake’s presence, saying, “Every day I laugh a little bit more. It’s not so lonesome.”

Melani felt a deep connection with Jake, sensing his understanding and love.

“I think Jake knows that I love him,” she said, describing how he would seek affection and interact with her in a way only a dog who feels loved would.

This heartwarming story is a beautiful example of mutual rescue, where both Melani and Jake found solace and joy in each other’s company.
