Mary Lou Retton Speaks Out Now That She Is ‘Fighting For Her Life’
When most people think about Mary Lou Retton, they picture the young girl who was an Olympic gymnast many years ago. She is still the same person, but these days she has been through some challenges and is talking about some of them and how she is now feeling.
Since Mary Lou Retton is best known for her skills as a gymnast, you may not think of her as being someone who would have to deal with a serious life-threatening problem. Unfortunately, that is what happened and she now says she was fighting for her life, and struggling to make it.
During the interview, in which the former Olympic athlete opened up about her life, she admitted that it was a rare occurrence. She doesn’t like talking about herself or her private life, but she did say that she was having a problem breathing on her own because of a rare form of pneumonia she was dealing with.
According to Retton, her doctors had changed their diagnosis a number of times. They are still wanting the biopsy her lungs, but waiting until she has gained strength so they can discern what has really gone wrong. She is dealing with extreme fatigue and difficulties with breathing.
At one point, Retton was in the ICU for three days but after being discharged, she is still on oxygen. Her family, in the meantime, is trying to cover her medical bills and stay strong for her.
A crowdfunding account was set up by her four daughters in order to cover the medical bills. Although many of the details were not covered due to privacy, it did say that she did not have insurance.
Despite the fact that she does like to remain private, she did open up to say that her condition was serious. She’s very thankful to be alive because the doctors thought she would have to be placed on life support at one point.
She is now on oxygen but she continues to do what she can to maintain her health. She was looking forward to much better than this in life, and we hope she is able to achieve it.
