Gisele Bündchen’s Mother Vânia Nonnenmacher Dead at 75, According to Brazil Hospital

Gisele Bündchen’s mother Vânia Nonnenmacher has died. She was 75.

Hospital Moinhos de Vento released a statement confirming that Nonnenmacher died of cancer at the Porto Alegre, Brazil-based hospital on Sunday after being admitted on Friday.

A rep for Bündchen did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment. Bündchen has not yet posted about her mother’s death as of Sunday afternoon EST.

In addition to the 43-year-old supermodel, Nonnenmacher is the mother of Bündchen’s five siblings, twin Patricia and sisters Rafaela, Graziela, Gabriela and Raquel.

Nonnenmacher was a retired bank teller, according to Vanity Fair, and raised her daughter in what the outlet referred to as a “hardworking middle-class family” in the town of Horizontina in Brazil.

Bündchen has frequently shared images and memories of her mother on social media over the years — from celebrating her on Mother’s Day last May to sharing a family reunion photo on Instagram in September, where she and her siblings posed alongside Nonnenmacher and husband Valdir Bündchen at a round table.

“Always in my heart and prayers ❤️,” Bündchen captioned the post at the time.

Back in September, Bündchen opened up to PEOPLE about caring for her ailing parents, explaining at the time that it was “very tough on my family.”

“It’s been a lot — in every area of my life,” she said. “I feel like whenever it rains, it pours. With all the different twists and turns that life takes, all we can do is the best we can given what happens in our surroundings.”

Bündchen previously wrote about her mother in a 2010 blog entry, shortly after welcoming her first child, 14-year-old Benjamin, with Tom Brady. She and Brady later welcomed daughter Vivian Lake, 11.

“I grew up witnessing my mother always trying her best at doing all she could for the six of us girls. My mom devoted her entire life to her family and did it with such grace,” she wrote on International Women’s Day.

“She is my hero. She is the reason why I believe a woman is the core of a family … I can only hope to be for my kids what she will and always be for us … Our rock.”
